Combine sugar, syrup, and water in heavy, 2 quart sauce pan.
Stir over low heat until sugar dissolves and mixture is boiling moderately.
Cover. Cook 3 minutes.
Remove cover.
Use silver knife blade wrapped in damp cloth to remove any crystals that formed on side of pan during cooking process.
Cook to soft ball stage.
While syrup cooks, add salt to egg whites and beat until stiff.
Slowly pour 1/2 hot syrup over egg whites beating constantly.
Cook remaining hot syrup to firm ball stage.
Slowly add remaining hot syrup to egg white mixture, beating constantly.
Add vanilla.
Beat until mixture holds shape when dropped from spoon.
Swirl from teaspoon onto waxed paper.
